With live wedding painting being such a new addition to the wedding industry, you’d be forgiven for not knowing how it usually goes down on the big day. Obviously, each wedding is different, and artists will always endeavour to fit into your intended timeline however, there are a few set procedures than tend to make up the structure of the day.

1-2 hours before the ceremony: Your artist will arrive at your venue and begin to set up their easel and equipment. They will make themselves known to your venue coordinator and/or wedding planner if you have one, as well as introducing themselves to any other suppliers you have there on the day. When appropriate, they will also touch base with your photographer. Usually, your artist will have already been in contact with your photographer prior to the day.
If your artist’s style is to include a background, they will likely start painting this using reference photos that they have taken.
During the ceremony: During the ceremony, your artist will likely be there, being inconspicuous at the back – especially if they have been booked as a surprise! They will take some photos and video footage to be used in reels later or even as the painting!

After the ceremony: Once you have had your confetti aisle (if you’re having one) and had a chance to meet and greet your guests, this will probably be the ideal time that your artist will steal you away for their mini photoshoot to capture the image to be transformed into a painting. You will have already discussed options prior to the day, and if you are brave enough to give your artist creative licence, this is where the magic will really happen as they capture your love and connection.

During drinks reception:Â After shortlisting the best options, your artist will check you are happy with the vision and then return to the easel to begin painting. This is where you can find your artist for the remainder of the day and your guests are very welcome to interact and chat - we love speaking to people!!
During the Wedding Breakfast: This is when your artist will take their break. If you have kindly supplied them with a meal, they will enjoy this in a separate room with any other suppliers. Vendors are always grateful for being fed on the day – it really does make a difference when you’re working flat out for 10+ hours!
Evening Onwards: Your artist will now resume painting for the evening and your guests are free to check in as and when they wish. When finished for the evening, your artist will come to let you know and usually film revealing the painting to you. This is one of my favourite parts of the day seeing my couple’s first reaction to the painting. If your photographer or videographer is still here at this point, this can make for a lovely moment to capture.

Following this, your artist will likely take the painting away with them, where further work will be completed in the safety of their studio so you don’t need to worry about a wet painting on the night of your wedding! Each artist has different timelines that they work to, but you can expect to receive your final portrait anywhere between 4-12 weeks after the wedding.
And that’s it! That’s what to expect from your wedding artist on your big day!
Fellow artists – let me know if your days look different, I’d love to know! And couples - let me know if you have any questions about the day!
